New Year – New Miles

2016 is upon us.  I did not make it to midnight to ring in the new year.  One of the reasons is that I planned to start off the year right and after getting a good night’s sleep, I got up at dawn and went out for a run.

Before I get to how the first run of the year went – it was odd as I stepped out of the van.  Apparently, I was one of the few people up in Staunton at 7 AM on New Year’s Day.  I stepped out of the van and it was perfectly quiet.  The only thing I heard was the rushing in my ears from the quiet.  There were no birds, no traffic, no wind.  Just beautiful silence.  I think that inspired the good run.

It was a speed work session, so it involved running and walking, but it was a good session with some good 800 meter runs.  I’m trying to get to the point where I can run 400 meters in 1:45.  That would get me to a 7 min/mile pace.  While I can’t sustain that over the long run, I would love to be able to sustain that for 800 meters.

I thought it was a great way to start off the new year.  2015 was a tough year for running.  I completed less than 900 miles.  I don’t want to repeat that again.  As I already wrote in my summary of 2015’s running, I hope to put in over 100 miles a month.  I need 25 miles a week to do that.  Getting 5 miles in on the first day of the week/month/year is a good start.  I plan on getting out tomorrow afternoon – before the weather starts turning colder next week.  Getting in that initial 100 miles during the coldest month of the year is going to be a challenge.  So that is my challenge to myself and it will take some perseverance – but I am up for the challenge.

The good news is that I am .5% to my goal, because I got up and ran yesterday.  Here’s to a year of Pressing On!
