Yard Saleing vs. Running

yard_sale_1_mediumThis morning as I went out and came back from my run I noticed many, many yard sales.  I often take a lot of grief for being such a dedicated runner, especially on warm, humid mornings like this.  It’s interesting how many people are out yard saleing – trying to get the best deal – early on a Saturday morning.  Like I said I take some grief for getting up early on a Saturday morning – when I could be sleeping in – to get some miles in.  But running has really become a lifestyle choice of mine because I really never want to go back to the way it was six years ago.  I enjoy having energy – I enjoy not being out of breath on a short brisk walk.  Yes, I have my aches and pains that are caused by running but it sure beats the alternatives.

Perhaps the reason I am so giddy this morning is because it has been a great week on the running front.  I broke the 30 mile mark (this includes two 3 mile walks) for the first time since October.  Yes, I really have been struggling at this.  This morning’s run was one of my faster mid-length (6-7 mile) runs in quite some time clocking in at a 9:06 min/mile pace.  I need to shave 6 seconds a mile and get back under that 9 min/mile pace and then head for faster territory.  Summer is a great time to press on because of the heat and humidity, when that finally breaks in late August/early September it is a whole new ballgame.  I’d really like to get back to running in the 8:30 min/mile or faster arena.  Part of that will entail taking some of the winter pounds off that I still haven’t been able to shed.  Like I said, it’s been a good week and I look forward to pressing on!
