Prayer for the Week

Prayer_Banner_22-760x176O God, the protector of all who trust in you, without whom nothing is strong, nothing is holy: Increase and multiply upon us your mercy; that, with you as our ruler and guide, we may so pass through things temporal, that we lose not the things eternal; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Give thanks to the Lord and proclaim his greatness.
    Let the whole world know what he has done.
Sing to him; yes, sing his praises.
    Tell everyone about his wonderful deeds.
Exult in his holy name;
    rejoice, you who worship the Lord.
Search for the Lord and for his strength;
    continually seek him.
Remember the wonders he has performed,
    his miracles, and the rulings he has given,
you children of his servant Abraham,
    you descendants of Jacob, his chosen ones.

He is the Lord our God.
    His justice is seen throughout the land.
He always stands by his covenant—
    the commitment he made to a thousand generations.
This is the covenant he made with Abraham
    and the oath he swore to Isaac.
He confirmed it to Jacob as a decree,
    and to the people of Israel as a never-ending covenant:
“I will give you the land of Canaan
    as your special possession.”

Purple Fish

WPH-PurpleFishPin_focusPurple Fish is a book by Mark Wilson. Mark is the lead pastor at Hayward Wesleyan Church. Mark and his family have become friends with us.  This book is about evangelism – it is one of Mark’s passions.  In the book, Mark explains there are no hard set rule and plans to follow when it comes to finding lost people for the Lord. It is something every Christian can do because the Spirit uses every Christian talent. I also like how he uses another of his passions – which is fishing – to use as a metaphor of how to seek people who do not know God. In his book he talks about the best way to learn to fish – that is to hire a fishing guide.  He then reminds us that the Holy Spirit is our spiritual guide to find those who are lost. One of the best reminders is that no person wants to be someone’s project so be careful how you view the people you are witnessing to, blessing and praying for. Mark reminds us how Jesus ministered to people, in the book he gives at list of nine things.

  1. Jesus noticed people.
  2. He prayed for them.
  3. He listened.
  4. He asked questions.
  5. He loved them.
  6. He welcomed them.
  7. He facilitated good conversations.
  8. He served with people who were willing to spend time with him.
  9. He shared the good news with people who were willing to spend time with him.

One other thing that Mark talks in his book is what he calls treasure hunts. We have been at FLAME when he has had his class do a treasure hunt. Our son James been a part of one of these treasure hunts and he was so blessed by it.

We only own one car so I spend a lot of time dropping off and pick up family members. I spend of a lot time waiting for them so I always have a book with me to read. When I was reading Purple Fish, I had a lot of people coming up to me asking me about what is the book about with that title. It gave me a chance to talked people about telling others about God. It was interesting that when Christian came up and asked about the book. When I told them it was about evangelism, they quickly left me alone.

This book is a must read for every Christian who is afraid of tell others about God .
