Several weeks ago, I was made aware of a new book coming out from Wesleyan Publishing House called Ageless Faith. It was written by Keith Drury and his son David. It is a conversation between a father and son and we get to “peak over their shoulders” during this conversation. The conversation seeks to reconcile the differences in generations on several topics in the life of the church — worship, community, ordination, women in the ministry, heaven, conversion, sanctification, and several other topics.
I can say that this will be a first for this blog (a book review) and maybe not the last. Like I said this book is a conversation between a father and son — one a baby boomer — the other from “Generation X.” For me, it’s always been difficult to pin exactly what generation I would align. There are times I feel aligned with the baby boomers and time I feel aligned with the next generation. You see I was born in the transition period. While I was at college, I identified much more with those whom I when to school. Yet their were time when I didn’t identify at all because I was ten years older than most of the students at Indiana Wesleyan.
This book addresses the tensions between the generations. Our world is changing faster — technology is changing at rapid pace. It would also appear that our churches are changing. How do we deal with that?
Keith and David Drury are having a conversation between the generations. After several pages of discussion between father and son on a particular topic, they allow us in on the conversation through a series of questions. This allows the local congregation to then have a conversation regarding these same subjects. For those of us interested in intergenerational dialogue, it would be a great book. I know that we have already discussed the possibilities of having an elective Sunday School class using this book. I recommend it for pastors and congregations of all ages.
Over the next few weeks, I will be working through this book in a series of posts. I encourage you to join the conversation. Blessings…
