Several weeks ago Dale and I substituted in the Middle School Sunday School class and we talked about not taking God’s name in vain. We started off by having each student look up the meaning of their name in a book of baby names. As they were making posters with their names and meaning, I had them tell the story about how they each got their names. For example, my name is Pamela and when I was born I was the fifth daughter in my family. My parents only had the name Richard. They were hoping for a boy. Well, they got another girl and had no girl’s names picked out. I was named after the two nurses in the room. After we talked about how we got our names, I asked them if they liked their names. Most of them did not. I like Pamela, Pam is ok (most people call me this), and I hate Pammy. Then I asked them if they could name themselves what would the name themselves. Most would not change their name because their name makes them who they are in life — which was the whole point. The reason we honor God’s name is that it is worthy of being honored.
On a side note, I told the teens about how we lookout for our children Meaning there are rules about what shows you can watch on TV and what kind of music they can listen to. I felt really bad when one of the girls said under her breath a less we care enough about our children to be interested in what they do in life. Apparently, her family doesn’t even care, which always tugs on our hearts when our students say things like that. That is the reason that Mosaic is so important to us.
