Tonight we had a combined Maundy Thursday service. By that, I mean Mosaic combined with adults. At times it really feels like we have two churches — the church that meets on Sunday morning and Sunday night and then Mosaic which usually meets on Wednesday. This week we moved it to Thursday night and used it as a jumping off point for the whole weekend.
The students were on their best behavior tonight, which was surprising considering they have off of school for either four days or a week depending on which school district they are in. Second, there is a full moon tomorrow. I was very pleased with their behavior — It gives me hope that we are making a difference. Almost a year ago, I was ready to give up on the whole thing! What a difference a year makes.
Tonight, we took a look at several key elements of the Passover meal and how they applied to the Israelites coming out of Egypt. Some experienced horseradish for the first time — my daughter Anna, took too much and ended up breathing “fire.” I guess her sinuses are cleaned out. However, this was not the first time she experienced horseradish, so she should have known better.
We also had some charoset which is a mixture of apples, cinnamon, walnuts, and grape juice. Some also saw Matzo for the first time. It was an excellent service and we concluded by partaking in communion together.
I heard several comments on how much everyone enjoyed the service. Currently, Pam and I are awaiting the arrival of our other daughter from college along with my mom and dad. Carp Diem!
