Epiphany
January 6, 2008
Tomorrow, we conclude the short season of Christmas. Sunday we will celebrate Epiphany — on this day, we remember that the wise men came to the home of Jesus to visit Him and to come and worship Him. Matthew’s gospel gives us the details.
Another thing about this season is that it is a season of light. Arise, Jerusalem! Let your light shine for all to see. For the glory of the Lord rises to shine on you. Our songs on Sunday will reflect not that the light is coming, like we did during Advent, but that the Light of the World has arrived. The season following Epiphany is about the church’s mission and being the hands and feet of Jesus. This theme can be found in Paul’s letter to the church at Ephesus. 10 God’s purpose in all this was to use the church to display his wisdom in its rich variety to all the unseen rulers and authorities in the heavenly places. 11 This was his eternal plan, which he carried out through Christ Jesus our Lord. God wants His church (the Bride of Christ) to make the mystery about Christ known to the world.
