One of the things that we try to do on a regular basis is to take our students to a local rehab center. One of our shut-ins is a resident there. Tonight, we had several different things happening.
First, three of our students are moving away. They have been part of the ministry here since we arrived. Unfortunately, Charlotte, NC is over two hours away, so while they may visit, we won’t see them on a regular basis. We said goodbye over Little Ceasar’s Pizza, cake and ice cream. I prayed for them that God will continue to take care of them and that they would find a church somewhat like ours.
Second, Pam and I took our elementary students over to the nursing rehab center. Last week, Pam had the students make thinking of you cards for the residents. On the way in and way out, we handed out cards to any resident who would take one. We went in and sang to Mary and her friend Maddie (who both thoroughly enjoyed it.) We even gave them cards. On our way out, we usually take some time to visit with those gathered in the lobby. We talked for a few moments and then sang to them. They appreciated it greatly.
Here’s what motivates us to do this. The author of Hebrews writes: 23 Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise. 24 Let us think of ways to motivate one another to acts of love and good works. 25 And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another, especially now that the day of his return is drawing near. (the emphasis is mine.)
Jesus said that He was the vine and we are the branches and that we would be known by the fruit we produce. Jesus tells the story of the sheep and the goats. In the words of that old kids song, “I just want to be a sheep!”
