A series of continuing posts with reflections based on the Revised Common Lectionary. We are in the long season of Ordinary Time. The color is green indicating growth.
Amos 8:1-12; Psalm 52; Colossians 1:15-28; Luke 10:38-42
Luke records Jesus coming to Mary and Martha’s house. Martha was all distressed about taking care of Jesus and Mary was simply sitting at Jesus’ feet. Martha was worried about the externals, but Mary was worked about heart things. It appears that neither the Israelites in Amos or David in the Psalms were concentrating on the heart things. The people of Israel were caught once again in the vicious cycle of sin and were about to be destroyed and exiled. Only Christ can make the difference and break the cycle. No wonder Mary sat at Jesus’ feet and listened. Paul exalts Christ in Colossians:
15 Christ is the visible image of the invisible God.
He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,
16 for through him God created everything
in the heavenly realms and on earth.
He made the things we can see
and the things we can’t see—
such as thrones, kingdoms, rulers, and authorities in the unseen world.
Everything was created through him and for him.
17 He existed before anything else,
and he holds all creation together.
18 Christ is also the head of the church,
which is his body.
He is the beginning,
supreme over all who rise from the dead.
So he is first in everything.
19 For God in all his fullness
was pleased to live in Christ,
20 and through him God reconciled
everything to himself.
He made peace with everything in heaven and on earth
by means of Christ’s blood on the cross.
Christ makes all the difference. And that is my goal to learn as much about Him and live as He commanded.
