This week’s readings bring us two accounts of children being raised from the dead. I King records the prophet Elijah raising the widow’s son. This happens after Elijah requests food and water from the widows. This is during a severe drought brought on by King Ahab’s disobiedience. The woman does not want to give the prophet any food because she is about to prepare the only food she has left. The prophet asks her to trust him. She does and the food and water don’t run out until the drought is over.
Jesus also raises a young boy and the people say, “A mighty prophet has risen among us.”
The psalmist writes, “The Lord protects the foreigners among us. He cares for the orphans and widows…” Not only does the Lord protect the widows and orphans, but James tells us that “Pure and lasting religion that the Father accepts is to take care of the widows and orphans in their distress and to keep yourself from being corrupted by the world.”
This is what Christ calls us to do. We looked at that on Pentecost Sunday. When the Holy Spirit is in control of our lives we can do what he calls us to do. Is the Spirit in control of your life? Are you following His mission?
