Here are the readings for the Sixth Sunday of Easter. AKA, Mother’s Day. We have been journeying through Year C of the weekly readings from the Revised Common Lectionary. Wesleyan author, Lawrence Wilson, has some great thoughts each week.
The readings: Acts 16:9-15; Psalm 67; Revelation 21:10,22-27, 22:1-5; John 14:23-29; John 5:1-9
John’s words remind us that Jesus was sending the Holy Spirit. We are just two weeks from the celebration that is Pentecost, when we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to the Church. It is a good reminder to us that the Holy Spirit is coming.
John’s words in Revelation are also forward looking. They tell us of the Holy City, the New Jerusalem. There are some wonderful words of comfort:
22 I saw no temple in the city, for the Lord God Almighty and the Lamb are its temple. 23 And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light. 24 The nations will walk in its light, and the kings of the world will enter the city in all their glory. 25 Its gates will never be closed at the end of day because there is no night there. 26 And all the nations will bring their glory and honor into the city.
3 No longer will there be a curse upon anything. For the throne of God and of the Lamb will be there, and his servants will worship him. 4 And they will see his face, and his name will be written on their foreheads. 5 And there will be no night there—no need for lamps or sun—for the Lord God will shine on them. And they will reign forever and ever.
God was faithful to his promise of the Holy Spirit. God has been faithful in all of his promises so far. I believe that God will continue to be faithful to his promises. I am looking forward to the city that John describes. What a wonderful hope.
