So now I am giving you a new commandment: Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.” — John 13:34-35
We move another step closer in our journey to the cross. We commemorate Jesus’ last meal with His disciples. Several things happen at this meal. One is that Jesus gets up and begins washing the feet of His disciples. Jesus shows us what it means to be a servant. After washing the disciples feet, he teaches them a new commandment — this is partially commemorate on Maundy Thursday. Jesus tells his disciples to love one another. We need to mirror the love that Jesus has shown to us. Jesus also initiated what we now know at the Lord’s Table or Communion. We are commanded to celebrate communion in remembrance of Jesus’ death and resurrection and we are to do it until He returns.
We will be gathering tonight to remember this night. The service ends with a reading from Matthew describing his betrayal in the garden and the disciples fleeing. As His disciples today, we will leave in silence awaiting His crucifixion as candles are extinguished and the lights are lowered.
