For our weekly devotional reading, we want to look at God’s call on our lives. The prophet Isaiah call consisted of a magnificent vision of God’s throne room. The apostle Paul was visited by Jesus himself. Here are this week’s readings:
Isaiah 6:1-13, Psalm 138, I Corinthians 15:1-11, Luke 5:1-11
At least on the surface, it appears that God calls some to great things and some to small things. My brother and I had a discussion about this at Christmas. We began talking about how God uses us in certain ways. I know that God has called me to Martinsville for certain reasons. One of those reasons was revealed in late November-early December and it wasn’t until afterwards that God revealed that to me. Why did God call me? I certainly didn’t feel qualified. I didn’t even think I had it in me. The past couple of months I have continued to feel this way, that God has called me here for a purpose and I am committed to following through on that and to build the Kingdom. Why does God call the unqualified? Perhaps for someone like me, it’s because if I felt I was qualified, I would probably feel I could do it on my own. Since I feel that I’m not qualified, I will rely on God more. I’m sure Isaiah and Paul did not feel qualified to build the Kingdom of God, but because they received a direct revelation from God, they obeyed. I won’t say that I received my call with the magnificence that Isaiah or Paul did, but I do know that I was called of God. Do I always feel qualified? Not at all. In our weakness we are made strong in Christ. Mark Schultz wrote the song “Broken and Beautiful.” It is a great reminder that in our brokenness we can be fully used of God.
