Many times when we think of Christ’s birth, we think of Mary and Joseph and (obviously) the baby Jesus, the shepherds, the angels, the wise men, Herod. But we forget to go back a little earlier in Luke’s account and pick up the story of Zechariah and Elizabeth. They were the parents of John the Baptist. John’s birth was also announced by an angel. What makes the story more incredible is that this couple was up in years. Because Zechariah didn’t believe, God made him mute until the baby was born. At his circumcision, Zechariah’s mouth was opened and he said, “No, his name is John.” He went on to prophesy and Luke records it for us.
This week for the Second Week of Advent, I’ll be looking at Zechariah’s prophetic song. Luke 3 gives us an example of how the prophesy was fulfilled. Stop by Monday to check out this week’s sermon.
