Over the years, I have accumulated a great deal of music. I have a very eclectic (or diverse) tastes in music. I don’t listen to much classical lately, but because my degree is in music, I have a great background in it. I probably have 3 to 4 hundred vinyl albums, tapes and cds. For the past few years, I haven’t bought anything new because most of the groups I listened to as a teen and young adult have disappeared. Most of my cd purchases in the last few years have been related to praise and worship. In the last year I have branched out and bought some new cds that are varied in style; Third Day, Nichole Nordeman, BarlowGirl, Casting Crowns and most recently, my wife and I purchased Todd Agnew‘s “Reflection of Something” for my daughter’s birthday.
After hearing “In the Middle of Me” and “My Jesus,” I knew this wasn’t your typical cd. Todd writes from a different perspective and makes you think. It sounds so much different that what is on the radio lately and, in my opinion, takes me back to the early days of Christian music. It is a bluesy, guitar-driven cd. One of my favorites of late, echos the book of Job. Our minds come up with all kinds of questions for God, like inequality and why evil people succeed. We are reminded of God’s words to Job in the refrain of this song:
Where were you when I split the sky and the sea?
Where were you when I taught the lion to roar?
Where were you when I made electricity
Fall from the sky in the middle of a thunderstorm?
When you’re going through a difficult time, remember that God is still in control. He made this whole world and it still belongs to him eventhough He’s given it to us to take care of. There are several songs that I’ll probably be writing about in the coming weeks as I think them over.
